"I went to the woods because I wished to learn to live deliberately."

Bayhaus is a sophisticated redwood box integrating sustainable functionality and simplified forms into a compact solution. Situated in San Francisco Bay’s Crissy Field, the residence strives to create harmony between modern technology and crafted livability.
Harmonies
The spaces are ordered from public to private and oriented from east to west with two central heat producing cores creating separation and controlling temperature throughout the day. A green roof of native plantings replaces the vegetation taken by the building’s footprint minimizing water runoff and providing additional insulation to the interior. Daylight is transmitted to every space through large apertures of insulated glass and operable skylights, reducing electrical and HVAC loads while providing uninterrupted views of adjacent landmarks. Operable louver system provides varying levels of protection from the sun (depending on season) and an extension of space to the exterior landscape.

This single-family residence is a partially prefabricated, modular home designed for low-income families affected by hurricane Ike. Significant wind damage and extension flooding destroyed entire neighborhoods in Port Arthur, Texas. This solution is a reinterpretation of a traditional southern typology; the shotgun house. The shotgun house -- known for its long, narrow footprint, stacking spaces, and front porch -- was therefore a perfect fit equating to efficiency, adaptability, and context.
The extremely low budget helped to inform design by adopting an assembly line efficiency based on standard materials, repetition of building components, and simple detailing.
The composite shingle was quickly chosen as an economic, wind-resistant material (up to 130 mph) that would be a very low maintenance to wrap the shotgun's shell. Residents would have the ability to select their own color. This simple act helps to begin the healing process, taking ownership of this new house and make it a home.

The genesis of the table was my wife and I's inability to find -- let alone agree on -- bedside tables. Not to mention the sheer price of a well-designed table was at times staggering. We decided that for the price we could design our own tables and ensure they meet all of our functions, our aesthetic and our budget.
The solid walnut top was reused from a portion another table. The sheet metal was chosen for its economy and ease of fabrication -- minimal cutting and zero welding. Although stainless steel has a high embodied energy, it is a very durable and quality finished material that requires very little maintenance and is 100 percent recyclable.

A.k.a. 'Table HD (Home Depot)' This outdoor table is designed to be an elegant rendition of the common picnic table, traditionally composed of standard 2x6 treated lumber and wood decking construction techniques. This update attempts to simplify the form while elevating the details.
Dimensions:
84x35.25x29.5 inches
Materials:
Western Red Cedar, Aluminum

cleavage |klēvij| n.
a sharp division; a split: the splitting of rocks or crystals in a preferred plane or direction.
The concept began with the material itself. Ceasarstone is a quartz surface material known for its heat, stain, scratch, mold, and mildew resistant properties. It is an obvious transition from the kitchen countertop into the dining room table. The form evolved from a simplified crystal geometry reconciled with a sheet material to form a shallow triangular profile. The table is modular, designed around the standard slab dimensions, allowing for various table sizes and uses.

Local Pro helps people select quality, local produce grown seasonally.
The emphasis on season helps to educate the user on which fruits and vegetables are grown locally. If tomatoes are not in season, but are in the grocery store, where did they come from? This simple act reduces food miles (the distance the food has to travel before it reaches your reusable grocery bag) and our food's carbon footprint.
To encompass the entire grocery shopping experience, the app's features grew to include finding farmers markets and grocery stores, where locally grown fruits and vegetables are available. A grocery list feature is also included in the design and can be accessed at anytime simply by rotating the device landscape.
Local Pro strives to raise awareness about our food, its origin, and its nutrition with a focus on sustainable lifestyle.

These logotypes are an extension of important themes in architecture and design in general. Without volume or materiality, they end up being figure-ground studies that focus on form, scale, proportion, repetition, and order.
